I always had the feeling he was like Krusty and was a miserable chain-smoker.
I watched the show when we were in the U.S. when I was a kid . . . but clowns have always been more frightening than funny, to me. I've never seen the draw to them. However, Bozo was definitely an icon. I thought he died a long time ago, but maybe I was thinking of his sidekick (whose name escapes me)
