Read the article again. The bill actually gives official recognition to an "Emancipation Day" holiday (also called "Juneteenth") on June 19 commemorating the emancipation of the slaves.

somehow, i don't think it's slavery the South is for or against anymore... it's just pride.. no one wants to be proven wrong.. much less having it shoved down their throats...
i think it's natural for concepts to be fully accepted when it's forced upon you, versus, when it's freely accepted by said individual/entity/state, etc....
i'm not sympathizing with slavery, or anything... so please send all hate mail to "idontgivearatsdonkey@yahoo.com"... just stating that sometimes, the reasons for something, is what's not said, rather than what is said.
kudos for people coming around.. especially when it's an entire entity.. you know what they say about society... it moves about as fast as a snail.. mebbe...

South Carolina wasn't denying they were freed.
They are just officially recognizing it.
Emancipation Day- Juneteenth.

"Ronald Myers with the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation says South Carolina would be the 28th state to permanently recognize the day. The state has used temporary resolutions in the past."

random and Happy: you can't TOTALLY blame Dan or the other commenters for not reading the article too well, especially when the AP is the one who put the title Dan used above the pic on the article. Shoot, when the media gets it wrong, they get it wrong, don't they?

Folks, they are simply the 27th state to recognize June 19 (Juneteenth) as a celebratory holiday of the day General Granger read General Order 3 in Texas at the completion of the Civil War.
